Yes, we’re watching the weather forecast! Snow Cancellation Policy
If the weather outside is frightful how do you know if a meeting is cancelled? If the schools are closed in Harvard, MA then the meeting is cancelled. In addition the board will send out an email announcement by noon of the meeting day if the meeting will be cancelled. Finally, you can always call the Fiber Loftat (978) 456-8669 and inquire – if they are closed there will be no meeting!
BUT…..if the weather isn’t as awful as they are predicting, we will have a Guild meeting on Tuesday evening at 7pm. We’ll have a half hour of social/library time, a brief business meeting at 7:30, then move on to our program. We’re excited to present:
Textile Illusions in Film
Meghan Boemer will discuss techniques used in film costuming that create the illusion of various materials. This includes aging and distressing, sculptural textiles, armor and repurposing materials.
So let’s hope that the weather holds and we can all get together for some inspiration!
Laura, co-Chair
Due to the pending storm, Farm Fiber Day at the Wayland Winter Farmers’ Market has been postponed until next Saturday, 31Jan. The regular market will still take place, with at least one fiber vendor for those needing a fix.
The Wayland Winter Farmers’ Market is off to a lively start and we are excited as the first of our (two) annual Farm Fiber Days is this Saturday, January 24th from 10 AM to 2 PM. (The second date is Feb. 21) There will be over 40 food vendors attending alongside 20 fiber vendors. Join us for breakfast and lunch in the lush greenhouse at Russell’s Garden Center.
Attending will be a talented group of local farmers who produce yarn, top, roving and finished fiber products from their own animals. Additional vendors include dyers of locally sourced fiber. Visit angora bunnies from Evergreen Farm and watch spinning (drop spindle and wheel) with Jonathan and Sheila Bosworth of Journey Wheel and sock making machine demonstrations by Subito Farm. Barbara Parry of Foxfire Farm will be signing her book, Adventures in Yarn Farming: Four Seasons on a New England Fiber Farm.

Here’s a scarf I just finished. It is in deflected doubleweave with differential shrinkage. The green is merino wool, the white 10/2 tencel. The first picture is one side of the scarf as it came off the loom. The other pictures are after wet finishing in warm water with detergent and agitation. The weftwise shrinkage was 50%; warpwise 35%.
Hi! I just finished watching “The Efficient Weaver” DVD by Laura Fry. I borrowed it from the Guild Library at the last meeting and will be returning it this month, so it’ll be available to another member at the meeting on the 27th. Even after weaving for almost 15 years, I still got some great tips from it, yet it was very understandable for all levels of weaving. Now off to the studio to implement some improvements!
You can see the list of videos and DVDs in the Guild Library pages.
Guild members had a great time making baskets at our 2 December meeting. Everyone was surprised at how difficult it was to make them! Krista found the kits online, and they were paid for through an education grant that the guild received from a past member. Carol made a prototype and prepared all the materials for the evening. Mine is a little lop-sided, but recognizable as a basket none-the-less.
Several years ago, guild members wove this blanket during weaving demonstrations at Fruitlands Museums. It was intended to go to the organization called Soldiers’ Angels (http://www.soldiersangels.org/), who provide various services to people serving in the Armed Services, including blankets for wounded soldiers. We finally finished it this year. The photos are from the Guild potluck in June 2014. I sent the blanket off and got this response from Soldiers’ Angels:
OhMYGOODNESS!!! I have never seen a blanket quite like that…it is a work of ART!!!
I am so very thankful!!! Your GORGEOUS Blanket will go to one of our 45-50 Veterans of the Menlo Park Veterans Hospital, specifically in the PTSD Recovery Program.
These Veterans come from all over the USA to participate in this intense 3-4 month program. They all live in Dorms and they are far away from the support of family and friends. It is especially difficult for them a Christmas time, which is when I will be distributing them at our annual Christmas Dinner.
I promise you that whoever receives this very Blanket, they will treasure it and know in their heart, hat someone who they have never met, truly cares and supports them.
Believe it or not, some of these Vets with PTSD have tried to take their own live before they entered the program, because their heart were so scarred from war, acts of extreme kindness like this, especially at a very emotional time of the year, helps them to HEAL and to be at Peace, because they are remembered and appreciated.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart!!!!
