Time Change/Meeting Reminder, Tues 28May2019!!!

Nashoba Valley Weavers' Guild Posted on May 24, 2019 by LauraMay 24, 2019

Our meeting this coming Tuesday, 28May2019 will begin at 1pm, at the Fiber Loft.

By popular vote, our members have asked for assistance in learning to spin their own fiber.  Please come for this afternoon of playing with drop spindles!  Members Krista and Laura will guide you through the yarn spinning process, and get you started on making your own yarns.

If you have a drop spindle (or more than one), please bring them.  There will be drop spindles available to try/practice with…and for purchase if you catch the bug!  We will talk about various kinds of spindles, and there will be ample time to practice if you’re a complete novice. We think you will leave with a solid base knowledge of how to make yarn. Practice, practice, practice, beyond what is taught, is key to making you well-skilled in the art!

Please join us if you have any interest in yarn, making your own, or just how it’s made!

weaving with fabric strips warp and weft

Nashoba Valley Weavers' Guild Posted on April 19, 2019 by Marie PorteusApril 19, 2019

Hello Team NVWG,

I would like to weave some fabric for a jacket so it has to be somewhat stiff (like denim-ish stiff) and have some body and weight. So my question is has anyone woven with fabric strips as both warp and weft?

My plan is to do something with strips much more narrow than what you would use on a rag rug and have a balanced plain weave on my rigid heddle loom.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Nashoba Valley Weavers' Guild Posted on April 17, 2019 by LauraApril 17, 2019

Shaft Switching! Doesn’t that term sound complicated and scary? Yet over and over we hear that it’s a very simple way to diversify your designs. Members Leslie Ardison and Amy Stevens will explain the mystery of this technique, invented by the legendary Peter Collingwood. Social and library time at 7pm, meeting to start promptly at 7:30. Meeting to be held at The Fiber Loft.

Fiberlicious Show at Loading Dock Gallery!

Nashoba Valley Weavers' Guild Posted on March 12, 2019 by LauraMarch 12, 2019
This show is going on at Western Avenue Studios in Lowell until the end of the month. If you go, check out the pieces by Ann Ribbens. She is my neighbor, and told me about the show. Anyone interested in a field trip?

The Loading Dock Gallery is approaching the month of March with an adventurous spirit!  Fiber and Textile artists, hailing from New England, explore materials and concepts that are so inspired, unique, and attractive to the senses, the exhibition had to be entitledFiberlicious!

Experience the joy of fiber-play that visually and tactilely push artistic boundaries. Ponder artistic pieces that challenge the senses utilizing fiber/textile inspired 2D, 3D, video or digitally-generated pieces and wearables, often offering commentary and are brilliantly unexpected.

Nashoba Valley Weavers' Guild Posted on February 21, 2019 by Marie PorteusFebruary 21, 2019

HI all,
There is a warping mill (~40 inches in length – horizontal) for sale in Harvard – appears to be in fine shape, 50$. I am thinking this is a good idea and hassome good advantages over a warping board. Your thoughts please?

Thanks.

Evelyn Vanderhoop on Friday 2/22 for our next meeting

Nashoba Valley Weavers' Guild Posted on February 11, 2019 by Penny LacroixFebruary 11, 2019

Note the change of day, time and location!

Friday February 22nd at 7 pm at the Memorial Congregational Church at 26 Concord Road in Sudbury. Evelyn Vanderhoop will be arriving at 6:30 to set up and have some chat time before the program starts promptly at 7.

Evelyn Vanderhoop with a handwoven tunic

The Nashoba Valley Weavers’ Guild and the Boston Area Spinners and Dyers are jointly hosting an evening presentation by Evelyn Vanderhoop, Haida weaver.

Evelyn and her family carry on the long textile traditions of the Haida, a Northwest Coast people, with a particular interest in Raven’s Tail Robes. She has spent several years researching this almost lost technique of weaving. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts commissioned Evelyn to weave a traditional Raven’s Tail Blanket for their collections, and she will be presenting the robe to the museum in February. Evelyn is going to dance the robe at the MFA at 11 am Wednesday, February 20 (probably gallery 168). She will give two programs at the Museum that will include materials and demonstrations of technique on Thursday, February 21 (one hour each; one in late morning and one in early afternoon).

We have invited Evelyn to speak to our two Guilds (and other invited guests) about the history of these robes and the processes involved in making them. While the MFA’s Raven’s Tail Robe will not be part of her presentation (it will already be a accessioned into the museum’s collection), she will include some materials in her talk.

This is a very special program and speaker, and we’re very excited about being able to host this event! Note that this is in place of our regular 4th Tuesday meeting. There will be no meeting on 2/26 at the Fiber Loft.

For more information about Evelyn, please visit her website: http://evelynvanderhoopart.blogspot.com

In addition, a video is being made. There may be some filming at our event, and we may get to see some previews of the work in progress!
