Meeting Reminder, 22Jan2019, 7pm!
Hi Everyone,
Please remember that our next meeting is Tues, 22Jan at The Fiber Loft. Refreshments and social time will begin at 7pm. Our meeting will start promptly at 7:30. Amy Stevens will present “Blended Drafts”. See below for details!
Blended drafts are a wonderful way to utilize an 8-shaft loom. Two 4-shaft drafts are combined to make a single 8-shaft draft that allows weaving either of the original 4-shaft drafts. It’s a technique that is particularly effective with overshot drafts, but there are lots of other possibilities for its use. Don’t have an 8-shaft loom? You’ll still walk away with a new perspective on drafting, and a couple examples of “blended” drafts using only 4 shafts.
Handouts, including a bibliography from Kathy Tappan, will be provided. You are encouraged to bring along colored pencils or a computer drafting program on a pad or laptop (if you have one).
Amy Stevens got started weaving in Boulder, Colorado, where she lived from 1980-1984. She has no problem with drafts and warping, but is working hard to develop fluency in weaving—the years since Boulder have included many years with no time to weave. Amy joined NVWG in 2014, and has been treasurer since 2016. She weaves on an 8-harness, 45-inch loom that she bought in Boulder in 1983—a Schacht, of course!
04December AFTERNOON meeting reminder
Hi Everyone,
I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving!
Our combined Nov/Dec meeting is set for next Tuesday, 04Dec. This will be an afternoon meeting, starting at 1pm with refreshments, library and shopping (an advantage to the afternoon meeting!). At 1:30, we’ll have some brief announcements and time for show and tell. Our program this month will be hands on, making star ornaments made out of woven paper strips for holiday decorations. Member Joan Paul will lead this project. Joan would like a headcount, so she knows how many supplies to bring. Please email her if you plan to attend.
Looking forward to seeing everyone next Tuesday afternoon!
Guatemalan handwovens
I’m planning to bring some handwovens, baskets, and other handcrafts to sell at our guild meeting next Tuesday. They are Fair Trade items from Mayan Hands and UPAVIM, two women’s cooperatives in Guatemala (mayanhands.org and upavim.org). Bring your checkbooks and plan to shop!
Harvard’s Artisans Multi-Media Gallery Show and Sale!
Several of our members will have pieces in this sale!
Aspects of Double Weave at October Meeting
Our next Guild meeting is Tuesday, 23 October. Our guest speaker, Susan Rockwell from Braintree Vermont, will share her doubleweave experience.
This presentation will explore the many aspects of double weave on four shafts including: weaving two separate layers simultaneously, weaving double width cloth, tubular weaving and variations, as well as double weave pick-up for creative woven-in designs. We will discuss a brief history, drafting, finishing, setting up the loom and helpful tips. There will be numerous samples to examine. There will be a loom set up for demonstrating and if you would like to try weaving double weave.
This presentation will be valuable to ALL LEVELS of weavers!
Social time begins at 7, and the meeting will begin at 7:30 at The Fiber Loft.
8-shaft loom for sale
Sold!
This is a 40″ weaving width Harrisville Design with 8 shafts. Lots of heddles. Just what you need to go to the next level. Also includes a raddle, 2 reeds, lease sticks, a spool rack, a warping board and a warping wheel. It has a tension brake and new wires. It comes with lots of chains for tie-ups. I can add some stick shuttles if you’re interested. The back beam folds but not the front. This makes for a solid loom. Blankets and rugs can be woven on this as well as fine items. It works great. I just need the room.
Next week is Spinning and Weaving Week!
October 1-7, 2018 is “Spinning and Weaving Week”! The Wayland Summer Farmers’ Market will host a spin-in on Wed, Oct 3rd. Bring your wheel, spindle, loom, knitting or crochet (all are welcome!) and join the fun. The market is held at Russell’s Garden Center, from noon to 5pm.
Historic Textile Day Invitation
This is a special invitation from Diane Howes, a fellow weaver. The event is happening this coming Wednesday, and all are welcome! They still have space.
At The James House, Hampton NH
Wednesday September 26th, 2018 11am until 3pm
Come see our Collection of Early Handwoven Textiles!
Last year, with the closing of the American Textile History Museum in Lowell, the James House was the fortunate recipient of three boxes of early handwoven blankets and two boxes of early handwoven linens as well as many antique textile tools from their artifact collection.
The addition of this new collection complements the display of the James House’s period barn frame loom on which the weaving of a re-production early 19th century blanket is demonstrated to visitors.
The James House is a First Period home built in 1723 by Benjamin James. Benjamin, his son, Jabez, and grandson, Joshua, were professional weavers in this house for three generations.
Please join us for a day of examining these special textiles and equipment. This will be a hands-on experience and includes a tour of the house.
The fee for this event is a suggested donation of $15, made to The James House Association
Bring a bag lunch if desired.
Other dates are available upon request for groups of 3 or more.
Directions can be found on the museum website.
